Ninja Turtles are a group of four fictional characters who are anthropomorphic turtles that fight crime and evil in New York City. They are named after four Renaissance artists: Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo. They were created by comic book artists Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird in 1984, and have since become a popular media franchise that includes comics, toys, films, video games.
Some of the most famous adaptations of the Ninja Turtles are:
The 1987 animated series, which ran for 10 seasons and introduced many iconic elements, such as the Turtles’ love for pizza, their catchphrase “Cowabunga”, and their allies April O’Neil and Casey Jones.
The 1990 live-action film, which was the highest-grossing independent film at the time and spawned two sequels. It featured Jim Henson’s Creature Shop’s animatronic suits and a darker tone than the cartoon.
The 2003 animated series, which was more faithful to the original comics and had a more serious and mature style. It ran for seven seasons and had a crossover movie with the 1987 series, called Turtles Forever.
The 2012 animated series, which blended 3D animation with 2D anime influences and had a more comedic and adventurous tone. It ran for five seasons and had a crossover episode with the 1987 series, called Trans-Dimensional Turtles.
The 2014 live-action film, which was produced by Michael Bay and starred Megan Fox as April O’Neil. It featured CGI Turtles and a redesigned Shredder. It was followed by a sequel in 2016, called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows.
