There’s a scene in the trailer in which Powell’s character deploys drill bits from under his truck into the ground, ostensibly to stop the tornado from lifting the vehicle and carrying it hundreds of yards away. Timmer even confirmed to The Oklahoman that he brought Twisters writer Mark L. Smith along by storm and helped with the film’s concept.

But according to Entertainment Weekly, the movie is a standalone sequel that won’t require viewing the original to understand. However, director Lee Issac Chung loved Twister, so there will likely be a lot of reshoots even if Jones’ character isn’t directly related to the previous leads.

Helen Hunt, Bill Paxton, Cary Elwes and Philip Seymour Hoffman starred in the film as storm-chasing scientists trying to conquer the most powerful tornado in decades. Plot details for the sequel, which has been in the works since 2020, remain vague. It’s similarly unclear how the films will be related, though Universal describes the revisit as “a new chapter from the 1996 movie”.
