There’s no better way to appreciate the awesome splendor of our national and state parks than by spending a night under the stars.

#1 Arches National Park, Utah

The area around Moab, Utah, where camping is available, has stunning scenery, including mountains, canyons, and rivers. In Arches, one of the best campgrounds, photo opportunities abound, strenuous trails beckon hikers, and red stones serve as striking backdrops. Even though there aren’t many campsites, if the challenge appeals to you, there are plenty of opportunities to backpack your way through this park. Deep within the park, there is a campground called Devils Garden, where you can find restrooms and picnic tables, but that’s about it. Choose between the 3-mile hike to Delicate Arch, the park’s most famous arch, and the 7.2-mile Devil’s Garden Loop Trail. (Devils Garden Campground is closed until November 2017; alternative accommodations can be found at discovermoab.com.)

#2 Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii

In Hawaii, there are very few known locations where you can set up a tent, and one of them is in a national park. On the “Big Island” of Hawaii, two of the most active volcanoes in the world, Klauea and Mauna Loa, can be seen lighting up the night sky while spewing molten lava into the Pacific Ocean in Volcanoes National Park. And in the morning, explore the fascinating flora and unusual rock formations.

The restrooms and showers are located at the Nämakanipaio Campground, which is 4,000 feet above sea level and has tall eucalyptus and “hi”a trees. Two of the campsites at the brand-new Kulanaokuaiki Campground are wheelchair accessible. The world’s largest single mountain, Mauna Loa, can be reached by climbing to the top. The distance, round trip, is 13.1 miles. After a mile, there is a large, broken lava tube that is marked by two enormous cairns and is worth a quick detour for a photo opportunity. Here are some amazing active volcanoes that you can go see.
