NBA Boston Basketball Shirt
Boston Celtics is a professional basketball club headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts. The Celtics compete in the American Professional Basketball League (NBA) for the Eastern region and are one of the first eight clubs to create this tournament. The Celtics were born in 1946 and share their home stadium TD Garden with the Boston Bruins ice hockey club.
The team are recognized as one of the most successful clubs in NBA history, with the Los Angeles Lakers sharing a record of 17 championships and are currently the club with the most wins in tournament history. The New York Knicks and Celtics are the only two remaining clubs of the Basketball Association of America (BAA) that are still headquartered and home in the city where they were founded.
The Celtics’ biggest rival was the Los Angeles Lakers, especially in the 1960s and 1980s. In the 1980s, the two stars of the two teams, Larry Bird and Magic Johnson, often fought. The two teams have met in the NBA Finals a record 12 times, with the Celtics winning 9 of them.
The club also won the NBA’s Best Basketball Player Award 10 times by four famous players Bob Cousy, Bill Russell, Dave Cowens and Larry Bird – another record. The nickname “Celtics” and the iconic mascot “Lucky the Leprechaun” both originate from the history of the Irish community in Boston, accompanying the birth of the Original Celtics basketball club before the NBA era.
Success came to the club in the late 1950s when coach Red Auerbach brought in striker Bill Russell in the final days of the 1956 transfer market. Under the guidance of Russell and defender Bob Cousy, the Celtics first won the NBA crown in 1957. Russell and the generation of outstanding talents that followed John Havlicek, Tom Heinsohn, K. C. Jones, Sam Jones, Satch Sanders and Bill Sharman made the Celtics the greatest club in history with 8 championships in the 1960s.
After Russell retired in 1969, the club began a rebuilding process with the nucleus of striker Dave Cowens and defender JoJo White. Not long after, they won NBA championships in 1974 and 1976. They maintained their strength throughout the 1980s with the “Big Three” of Larry Bird, Kevin McHale and Robert Parish, bringing home three more NBA titles in 1981, 1984 and 1986. After winning 16 NBA championships in just 4 decades, they fell into a major crisis during the 1990s until the early 2000s.
It wasn’t until 2008 that The “new Big Three” system of Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen helped the Celtics win the championship, before losing to the Lakers in the 2010 finals after 7 games.
After the “new Big Three” parted ways with the club, the Celtics conducted a rebuild with coach Brad Stevens. In 2015, in his second season, Stevens helped the club return to the playoffs. In the 2017 season, the Celtics even finished the group stage at No. 1 in the Eastern region. Young stars like Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown then helped the Celtics reach the finals of the Eastern region in the 2018, 2020, 2022 and 2023 seasons.
