Godzilla appeared in 1954 in the film of the same name by director Ishiro Honda. Its signature weapon is an atomic heat beam, created by the nuclear energy inside the organism, launched through its jaws to destroy cities across Japan”.

Art director Akira Watanabe is the visual designer for Godzilla. He combined the attributes of dinosaurs to create a fictional animal with an upright posture, a body with spikes on its back and tail, arms and a body with clearly visible strong muscles.

The monster’s roar was provided by composer Akira Ifukube. He created a roar by rubbing the loosened contrabass strings with leather gloves, recording the sound and slowing down the playing speed. On screen, Godzilla reveals brutality in a way never before seen in cinema: unrestrained, senseless and indiscriminate. Humans were left helpless in the face of the monster’s brutal destruction as it reduced the city to ashes. The film reflects the impact of destructive weapons, nuclear bombs, on human life and recalls painful memories of the post-war period.
