In Irish folklore, the character was first mentioned in a medieval tale called Echtra Fergus mac Léti (The Adventure of Ferguson son of Léti). The story goes that Fergus mac Léti, King of Ulster, was sleeping on the beach when he discovered he was being pulled into the water by three Cúhorpáin. He woke up and arrested these “kidnappers”. In return, they granted the king three wishes to set them free.
Although there are many different stories about the origin of the Leprechaun, today the Leprechaun is considered a symbol of luck for the Irish. In today’s films and pictures, characters often appear short, wearing green clothes and top hats (the symbolic color of Ireland) and with long orange or brown beards.
